This time the UL Ragin’ Cajuns were on the right side of history.

Indeed, South Alabama’s frustration in the series continued with a 27th straight loss to the Cajuns in dramatic fashion.

After tying the game in the bottom of the seventh, UL got a game-winning RBI single from Dayzja Williams in the eighth for a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over the Jaguars in the Sun Belt series opener Thursday at Lamson Park.

"Honestly, I just wanted to get the ball on the ground," Williams said. "We had been practicing that for a long time – hit the ball on the ground, that’s it.

"It was a good feeling. I feel like we needed this to keep the momentum going."

Kayla Falterman’s infield single with the bases loaded tied the game in the seventh.

"Basically, I just wanted to get the ball on the ground and make something happen with the defense," Falterman said. "We’ve been working on hitting the ball up the middle all week, so that’s really kind of the plan all week.

"I just wanted to get the run home for our team, because we had been fighting the whole game."

Falterman was very excited to see Williams be the hero.

"I love Dayzja ... the slappers, a couple of us call ourselves, ‘The little lefties,’" Falterman said. "Nobody thinks the little lefty is going to get the RBI in the big moment like that. So for her to step up, I was just so proud of her … I was really happy she got that moment."

UL coach Alyson Habetz was glad to see Falterman at the plate with the game on the line in the seventh.

"I definitely like her being up with the game on the line," Habetz said. "She has ice running through her veins. She just gets the job done."

The irony of the two heroes is Williams hit in the 2-hole for the first time and Falterman was moved to the 5-hole.

"I was a bit confused but I trusted my coach and I just said, ‘OK, I got you,’" Williams said.

"We’ve talked about it throughout the season," Habetz said of Falterman's new spot. "She’s our hottest hitter and oftentimes when Maddie leads off and gets a hit  - not that we waste her on a bunt, but kind of – so we’ve kind of been talking about that."

The Cajuns are now 21-22 overall and 7-9 in Sun Belt play, while South Alabama dropped to 18-24 and 7-8. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.

The winning rally began with one-out singles from Mia Liscano and Maddie Hayden, before a hard smash off the third baseman for the game-winning RBI.

The winning streak over the Jags dates back to the 2016 season.

UL entered the series in 10th place in the Sun Belt standings with 11th place James Madison owning the tiebreaker over the Cajuns. Only the top 10 teams qualify to participate in the Sun Belt Tournament.

"They talked about it in the huddle," Habetz said. "Tyra (Clary) came in and said after the game, ‘This can be the turning point. We can rewrite our story right now.’

"To finally win one now, can we get over the hump? To come out on top was huge, but we have to come out and fight again tomorrow."

On her assigned senior night, UL starter Tyra Clary retired the first 11 batters she faced. The Jaguars’ first baserunner was Olivia Branstetter’s single off the wall in rightcenter with two outs in the fourth.

South Alabama also got an infield single with two outs from Frankie Andujo in the fifth, but Clary stranded two to keep the game scoreless.

In the sixth, though, Presley Lively led off with a double to leftcenter. Pitching coach Shelbi Sunseri immediately visited Clary, but left her in.

Amity White got the sacrifice bunt down and after Branstetter was intentionally walked, Stephanie Gonzalez got the RBI squeeze bunt down for a 1-0 lead.

The play was reviewed, but the safe call was upheld.

Mallory Wheeler came on to get two outs and preserve the one-run deficit, but the damage was done.

It wasn’t that UL’s offense didn’t have any chances off USA starter Olivia Cato.

UL left the bases loaded with two outs in the first, but the real frustration came in the bottom of the fifth.

Erin Ardoin singles up the middle and Mia Liscano’s bunt single set the stage for the top of the order.

But the Cajuns didn’t bunt to advance the runners and ended up stranding two in scoring position.

UL then left the bases loaded again in the bottom of the sixth after a Sam Roe leadoff single, Gabbie Stutes was hit by a pitch and Ardoin walked.

Cato threw a complete game to improve to 5-3 on the season, giving up no runs on five hits, two walks, two hit batsmen and striking out two.

Wheeler got the win to improve to 9-8 after 2.2 shutout inning.

The only bad news from the win, though, is starting shortstop Cecilia Vasquez suffered a finger injury in pregame drills and is out "indefinitely,'" according to Habetz.
