Baton Rouge police arrested a 16-year-old on Thursday in the Feb. 15 fatal shooting of 15-year-old Raymond Phillips on Prescott Road, said Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr., a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

McKneely said the juvenile was booked into the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center on counts of second-degree murder and illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile. Police have not released the name of the juvenile.

Investigators have not yet determined what motivated the juvenile to fatally shoot Phillips, McKneely said.

Phillips, a Broadmoor Middle School seventh grader, was shot outside of Tak's Food Mart on Prescott Road. Erica Williams, Phillips' mother, told reporters that her son had recently gotten into a fight with another boy and she thought the shooting may have stemmed from that.
