A woman was killed Tuesday morning in Pointe Coupee Parish after two tanker trailers veered off the roadway, striking her as she stood in her driveway.Â
Susan Shows, 74, of Lakeland, was standing in her driveway around 9:30 a.m. when the tanker trailers detached from the 2024 John Deere Tractor that was pulling them and hit her.
The John Deere had been traveling southbound on La. 1, just north of US 190, near Oscar. What caused the tankers to detach and veer off the road is unknown, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police.
Shows sustained serious injuries after she was hit. She was transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. State Police don't think impairment was a factor in this case, but standard toxicology tests were taken from the tractor driver.
"Troopers wish to remind motorists to always properly secure your trailer before hitting the road. Ensure the hitch is locked, safety chains are crossed, and the load is balanced," State Police urged in the news release about Show's death. "A well-secured trailer is essential for safe driving, and taking simple precautions like these can often mean the difference between life and death."
