The 4th Congressional District covers 20 parishes, mostly along the Texas border from Arkansas through Calcasieu Parish.

Johnson, a 52-year-old Republican, was first elected to the U.S. House in 2016 and became the lower chamber’s leader in October 2023.

Johnson defeated substitute teacher Joshua Morott, a Republican who didn’t raise enough money to report to the Federal Election Commission.

For Johnson to keep leading the House as speaker, second to the vice president in the presidential line of succession, Republicans must win at least 218 of the 435 seats.

Though Johnson spent little time campaigning in his Louisiana home district, he reminded constituents that having their member of Congress as speaker benefited them. He noted that Congress gives the needs of the 4th District a lot of more attention because he is the leader of the House.

Johnson, who lives in the northwest Louisiana town of Benton, spent most of his time during the 2024 cycle traveling the country to campaign for Republican incumbents and candidates.

He made a tour of 75 cities in 24 states during October and November – a total of 260 events across 40 states during the past year.
