The interim police chief for the city of St. George has announced he's running for a full term in the March 29 election.

Todd Morris, appointed by Gov. Jeff Landry in May, was previously the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's chief of crimes against persons and head of special operations.

"My focus as chief of police will be on strengthening partnerships at every level — whether working closely with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, regional law enforcement or federal agencies," Morris said in a news release Monday.

St. George is in the process of building its government after a Supreme Court ruling last year threw out challenges to its incorporation.

Last week, the interim mayor of St. George, Dustin Yates, also appointed by Landry in May, announced his candidacy for a full term as well.

Neither Yates nor Morris have yet drawn opponents.

St. George does not plan to have its own police force and will continue to rely on the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office for law enforcement. The police chief will act as a liason between the city government and the sheriff's office and other law enforcement agencies.
