AUGUSTA, Ga. — Whenever changes are made at the Masters tournament it’s big news, whether it’s to the Augusta National Golf Club course, to the way tournament qualifications are handled, to even the concession stand menu.
So it wasn’t surprising when word came out, on April Fool’s Day of all days, that the Masters was adding something called a “savory tomato pie” to the menu it generated a lot of talk and coverage.
It turned out to be no joke. The folks at Augusta National don’t do April Fool’s Day jokes. Sure enough, the tomato pie was on the menu when play was held here Saturday in the final round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
I decided to trek out onto the course and give one a try myself Thursday.
The pie costs $3, tied for the most expensive food item on the menu (no, really). It comes in a sleeve that looks like an old-fashioned McDonald’s apple pie container. The food stuff itself looks like a Natchitoches meat pie. And it tastes like a self-contained slice of pizza, very tomato-y and cheesy.
On a scale of 1-to-10 compared to other Masters concession fare, I’d give it a 6. It’s good for a snack, though not about to make me forsake my favorite item, the pimento cheese sandwich ($1.50).
No word whether they’re going to keep the STP on the menu permanently. Check back in 2026.
