Heavy rain is in the forecast for Baton Rouge this week, with the strongest downpours expected to begin Tuesday night and continue through Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

A total of four to six inches of rain is expected to fall over those days, the agency said, but that doesn't account for the heavier storms, NWS meteorologist Danielle Manning.

"We can't predict ahead of time where the heavier storms will be," she said.

The  Baton Rouge area will be under a flood watch from 7 p.m. Tuesday night until 7 p.m. Thursday night, the weather agency said.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," during that time, the National Weather Service said.

The chance of rain begins to taper off Thursday night, but the possibility of thunderstorms continues through Saturday.

It's a stalled weather front "hovering over our area" that will bring all the precipitation, meteorologist Brigette Lim said. "Thunderstorms and showers like to fire up on that."

The rain is expected to keep daytime temperatures in the upper 70s for most of the week, with lows in the 60s, Lin said.
